CHALLENGE  TO CHANGE”

---

                                    MESSAGE FROM YOUR DISTRICT GOVERNOR

Dear Lions

Now that the unofficial Lions year (September 1st) has begun, clubs should well be on their way to planning their year.  We certainly want to hold onto those projects that have been successful and move forward with new and exciting initiatives.  Striving forward will also allow us to excel in meeting established goals such as increased membership, community service projects, Massachusetts Lions Eye Research and International Community support.

From September 6-9, I attended USA/Canada Forum and returned from the event with renewed energy and enthusiasm for the year ahead.  One of the recurrent themes is our Challenge to Change message and the need to “rebrand” Lionism.  The general thrust of the message is that we need to become a vital part of the community and present our image as energetic concerned citizens dedicated to serving those less fortunate than ourselves.  If we hope to attract younger generation members who are more “bottom line” oriented, they must see Lions as active members addressing community needs.  In addition, meetings they attend need to be well planned, interesting, limited to ideally one hour, and fun.  To retain their interest, they need to be involved and feel they are making a difference in their community.

At USA/Canada, I also had the opportunity to meet our International Director guest for our mid-winter convention in January.  International Director Dr. Harold Ott and his wife, Barbara, live in Pennsylvania.  They are looking forward to coming to our convention and meeting the Lions of District 33S.

During the next two months you will have an opportunity to meet with your Region and Zone Chairs.  Their role is supportive, as they have been trained in a number of areas to assist you in meeting your needs.  There will also be regional meetings where Region Chairs have planned programs to provide training with information pertinent to the success of your club.  I urge you to support their efforts.  The planned topics will not be the same as those presented at the Cabinet Advisory Meeting.

I believe the following quotes are applicable at the club and district level as we address the Challenge to Change.  They essentially address change and provide the message that change doesn’t just happen – it is a conscious effort to move from the past and the present forward to the future.  How that starts is with a dream, idea or just a suggestion that grows into reality.

“You are today where your thoughts have brought you. You are tomorrow where you thoughts will take you.” James Allen

“If you open yourself up to possibility thinking, you open yourself up to many other possibilities.” Anonymous

“Big thinkers are responsible for creative, positive, forward-looking, optimistic pictures in their own minds and in the minds of others.” David J. Schwartz

Not above you, not beneath you, but with you!

Joe Rizzo                                                                                                                                        District Governor

A GREAT OPPORTUNITY

WEB SITE FOR LIONS, LIONESS, AND LEOS

(I thought this was worth repeating again)

A Lion from Australia set up a website for Lions, Lioness, and Leos to chat with each other globally via an online message board.  What a great opportunity to trade idea’s and promote fellowship!  This website may be accessed at www.lionschat.org   maybe this is something all Lions in the District would enjoy.

CHANGE IN INTERNATIONAL POLICY

REGARDING PAYMENT OF DUES

International has changed its policy regarding the payment of club dues.  Previously, clubs were allowed to owe $1000 for up to 150 days prior to being put in a suspension status.  The new policy is that if a club owes $20 per member and that due’s has not been paid within 150 days, the club is automatically put on suspension and given 90 days to pay the amount due or make payment arrangements.  If neither is done, then the club’s charter is automatically revoked after this 90-day period.

October 6th     District 33S

19th ANNUAL FAMILY WALK-A-LONG

District 33S LIONS a Journey for Sight

The District 33S Lions Club will bring attention to the growing need to helping raise money for Mass. Eye Lions Research, while having a good time, during the District 33 S Journey for Sight Walk-Along on October 6, 2007 at Scussett Beach State Park.

Massachusetts Lions Eye Research has helped people with eye diseases from glaucoma to diabetic eye disease to cataract extractions. We have contributed to hospitals and institutions such as B.U. Medical Center, Joslin Diabetes Center, New England Eye Center, Children's Hospital, Schepens Eye Institute, Howe Laboratory and many more.

In the last thirty years, Lions Clubs throughout the state have raised millions of dollars. Through the Massachusetts Lions Eye Research Fund Inc., they have provided critical financial support for various eye research programs. At Boston University, the Massachusetts Lions Eye Research Laboratory was created with the help of the Lions.

Do you know that . .

·         More than 40 million people in the world are blind today.

·         This very minute three people will begin to go blind.

·         Before the end of today, 4,300 more people will be blind.

·         80% of the world's blind are needlessly blind.

Highlighting the day will be a Car Cruise. The Cruise will start at 9 am in East Bridgewater and arrive at Scusset Beach around 10 am. The clowns from Shriners will again entertain and amuse us, we will have kite flying for the young and old, music to dance or just listen to, and of course lots of free food for all our participants. The Walk-Along on the canal is always a beautiful walk and healthy for us too!

If you cannot join us for the day, but would like to help Eye Research, please send your check with your generous donation made out to District 33 S Journey for Sight Walk-Along. You may mail your check to Past CST Pat Salvas, 11 Sampson Ave, S. Attleboro, MA  02703 (lioncub2703@netzero.net)

The Rosemary McCampbell Challenge Trophy will be up for grabs again this year for the club raising the most money for Eye Research.

The Walk-A-Long Committee is requesting donations for items for the raffle table on October 6th.  The item doesn’t have to be elaborate but just something nice or even funny.    If any club would like to help us out they can call me, Debbie Masciulli at 781-844-7851 or e mail me at dmasciulli@excite.com and arrange to pick up if need be.

Let’s make this the best year ever!

Scussett Beach State Park Camp Ground
