“CHALLENGE TO CHANGE”
MESSAGE FROM YOUR DISTRICT GOVERNOR
Dear Lions
Now that the unofficial Lions year (September 1st) has begun, clubs should well be on their way to planning their year. We certainly want to hold onto those projects that have been successful and move forward with new and exciting initiatives. Striving forward will also allow us to excel in meeting established goals such as increased membership, community service projects, Massachusetts Lions Eye Research and International Community support.
From September 6-9, I attended USA/Canada Forum and returned from the event with renewed energy and enthusiasm for the year ahead. One of the recurrent themes is our Challenge to Change message and the need to “rebrand” Lionism. The general thrust of the message is that we need to become a vital part of the community and present our image as energetic concerned citizens dedicated to serving those less fortunate than ourselves. If we hope to attract younger generation members who are more “bottom line” oriented, they must see Lions as active members addressing community needs. In addition, meetings they attend need to be well planned, interesting, limited to ideally one hour, and fun. To retain their interest, they need to be involved and feel they are making a difference in their community.
At USA/Canada, I also had the
opportunity to meet our International Director guest for our mid-winter
convention in January. International
Director Dr. Harold Ott and his wife, Barbara, live in
During the next two months you will have an opportunity to meet with your Region and Zone Chairs. Their role is supportive, as they have been trained in a number of areas to assist you in meeting your needs. There will also be regional meetings where Region Chairs have planned programs to provide training with information pertinent to the success of your club. I urge you to support their efforts. The planned topics will not be the same as those presented at the Cabinet Advisory Meeting.
I believe the following quotes are applicable at the club and district level as we address the Challenge to Change. They essentially address change and provide the message that change doesn’t just happen – it is a conscious effort to move from the past and the present forward to the future. How that starts is with a dream, idea or just a suggestion that grows into reality.
“You
are today where your thoughts have brought you. You are tomorrow where you
thoughts will take you.” James Allen
“If you open yourself up to possibility
thinking, you open yourself up to many other possibilities.” Anonymous
“Big
thinkers are responsible for creative, positive, forward-looking, optimistic
pictures in their own minds and in the minds of others.” David J. Schwartz
Not above you, not
beneath you, but with you!

CHANGE IN INTERNATIONAL POLICY
REGARDING PAYMENT OF DUES
International
has changed its policy regarding the payment of club dues. Previously, clubs were allowed to owe $1000
for up to 150 days prior to being put in a suspension status. The new policy is that if a club owes $20 per
member and that due’s has not been paid within 150 days, the club is
automatically put on suspension and given 90 days to pay the amount due or make
payment arrangements. If neither is
done, then the club’s charter is automatically revoked after this 90-day
period.
