“CHALLENGE TO CHANGE”
MESSAGE FROM YOUR DISTRICT GOVERNOR
Dear Lions
Now that the unofficial Lions year (September 1st) has begun, clubs should well be on their way to planning their year. We certainly want to hold onto those projects that have been successful and move forward with new and exciting initiatives. Striving forward will also allow us to excel in meeting established goals such as increased membership, community service projects, Massachusetts Lions Eye Research and International Community support.
From September 6-9, I attended USA/Canada Forum and returned from the event with renewed energy and enthusiasm for the year ahead. One of the recurrent themes is our Challenge to Change message and the need to “rebrand” Lionism. The general thrust of the message is that we need to become a vital part of the community and present our image as energetic concerned citizens dedicated to serving those less fortunate than ourselves. If we hope to attract younger generation members who are more “bottom line” oriented, they must see Lions as active members addressing community needs. In addition, meetings they attend need to be well planned, interesting, limited to ideally one hour, and fun. To retain their interest, they need to be involved and feel they are making a difference in their community.
At USA/Canada, I also had the opportunity to meet our International Director guest for our mid-winter convention in January. International Director Dr. Harold Ott and his wife, Barbara, live in Pennsylvania. They are looking forward to coming to our convention and meeting the Lions of District 33S.
During the next two months you will have an opportunity to meet with your Region and Zone Chairs. Their role is supportive, as they have been trained in a number of areas to assist you in meeting your needs. There will also be regional meetings where Region Chairs have planned programs to provide training with information pertinent to the success of your club. I urge you to support their efforts. The planned topics will not be the same as those presented at the Cabinet Advisory Meeting.
I believe the following quotes are applicable at the club and district level as we address the Challenge to Change. They essentially address change and provide the message that change doesn’t just happen – it is a conscious effort to move from the past and the present forward to the future. How that starts is with a dream, idea or just a suggestion that grows into reality.
“You are today where your thoughts have brought you. You are tomorrow where you thoughts will take you.” James Allen
“If you open yourself up to possibility thinking, you open yourself up to many other possibilities.” Anonymous
“Big thinkers are responsible for creative, positive, forward-looking, optimistic pictures in their own minds and in the minds of others.” David J. Schwartz
Not above you, not beneath you, but with you!
Joe Rizzo District Governor

PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT TO SEND A CARD TO A SOLDIER
I did this. It was very easy and quick. You can choose from pre-written messages or create one of your own.
If you go to this website, http://www.letssaythanks.com/ you can pick out a thank you card and Xerox will print it and it will be sent to a soldier that is currently serving in Iraq. You can’t pick out who gets it, but it will go to some member of the armed services.
How AMAZING it would be if we could get everyone we know to send
one!!! This is a great site. Please send a card. It is FREE and it only
takes a second. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the soldiers received a bunch of
these?
Whether you are for or against the war, our men and women over there need to know we are behind them!!!
Yours in Lionism,
DG Joe Rizzo

APPLICATION FOR AN INSURANCE CERTIFICATE
YOU ASKED - HERE IS THE ANSWER!
You will need a blank Insurance Certificate and a Cover letter to be faxed to Lions International for your fundraisers. I will e mail out separately a sample of the form and the telephone number and fax number you will need to submit your event.
A Lions Club should do this for every major event they have such as an Auction, Bazaar, Flea Markets (occurring at a Town’s Senior Center, etc.

WALK A LONG THANK YOU
To all who participated in the Walk-A-Long on October 6th, I would like to thank you. Because of all your hard work the District raised over $15,000 thus far. Just a few notes that you may want to know. Donations can be received right up until April 15th. However, if you want to be included for a jacket, date bar, patch or the most money raised by a club trophy, all monies must be turned in no later than December 31st. Any monies received after December 31st are welcome, however due to time restraints on placing orders for the jackets and having the trophy engraved, this will be the deadline.
Once again thanks to all of you for participating and I look forward to seeing you soon!
Yours In Friendship
Pat Salvas, District 33S Walk-A-Long Treasurer

BRIDGEWATER FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS
The Bridgewater Festival of Lights is a free Christmas light display with an animated walk through village. What started out as a small personal home Christmas display has now become a major attraction in the Bridgewater, South Shore area of Massachusetts. Although it is not the largest or brightest it has the distinction of being able to walk through it and you can get close to the displays. If that’s not enough, the Bridgewater and Hanson Lions Clubs come in on the weekends bringing Santa. Free Hot Coffee, Hot Chocolate, Popcorn and other goodies. When Santa is here you can get quality pictures for a small fee.
Go to http://bridgewaterfestivaloflights.com/ to check out events. Procast Outdoor Fireplaces of E Bridgewater has donated the use of a large Precast Fireplace to help keep Santa warm!!! The wood (and we use a lot of it) was donated by Enos Landscape and Larry’s Lawncare of Bridgewater.
