Monthly Message from
District Governor Joe Rizzo
We still have a long way to go before the end
of our year, so I urge you to keep up the good work you’re doing in your
service to others. This is a rather lengthy newsletter filled
with dates and items of interest to all members.
State Convention, May
9-11 Radisson Hotel,
The featured guest will be Lions Clubs
International 2nd Vice President, Eberhard J. Wirfs and his wife
Lion Margrit. Applications have been sent to all Club
Presidents.
State Convention Voting
On March 25th, notices were sent to clubs
regarding voting at the State Convention.
At the state convention this year, clubs will be voting for District and
Vice District Governors as well as debating the adoption of a statewide CORI
Policy. District 33S adopted a policy on
November 1st. This policy, if
adopted, will guarantee a uniform policy statewide. Along with the proposed policy will be a
question and answer sheet to inform clubs about the overall policy. When adopted, we may have to modify our
policy, but I do not believe there will be any changes that would significantly
change what we currently have in place.
Your vote is needed to show other organizations in the state that the
Lions act responsibly when it comes to protecting children under our care.
State Convention Delegates
A reminder that delegates selected to represent your club
and who will be voting at the State Convention must have been be a Lion for one
year and a day as of the Convention voting date which is May 11th. Please return your delegate forms to CS Joyce
Middleton as quickly as possible so that we can expeditiously process your
delegate registration information.
Club Scrapbooks should be sent to your respective Zone Chair Persons by May 15th. The Zone Chairs are then responsible for getting them to Region Chair Roland Grenier who will supervise the judging.
This is an award given to a first year Lion who has performed over and beyond what would normally be expected of a new Lion. Nominations for this award should be signed by the Club President and sent to Region Chair, Martin Middleton no later than May 24th. The winner will be announced on June 16th at our District 33S Celebration (formerly called Awards Night).
PAWSOX Game for Campaign
Sight First II, June 8th

calendar for this date as all districts in
Club
Officer Training- June 9th
Club
Office Training will be held on June 9th at the
District 33S
Celebration (Formerly called Awards Night) – June 16, Holy Ghost Hall,
This meeting once again is being planned to be interesting, fun and informative. This marks the end of the District meetings etc. and it is also a time to recognize those who have contributed their talents to the District and but to celebrate the accomplishments of all the clubs in our District. I am asking all those clubs that plan to attend to prepare a poster board with pictures of some of their significant events during the year and to be available to discuss them with other members during the social hour of 6-7 pm.
Items of Special
Interest:
Congratulations to President Nancy Sullivan
and the members of the Easton Lions Club which has been selected as one of
three finalists in the category of Outstanding Lions Club for
the International Challenge to Change Award.
All finalists will be recognized and the winner announced during a
special awards ceremony at the Second Plenary Session of the 2008 Lions Clubs
International Convention at the
Each year this
Committee of dedicated Lions provides 2 events for handicapped children – a
Christmas Party and a Summer Cookout with games, food and fun. Because of privacy issues, we have been
experiencing problems identifying children with special needs to invite to
these functions. The Committee is
requesting each club help identify potential children who could benefit from
these functions. If you know of any
child or family with a child, please contact either Pat Salvas (508-761-4067)
or Debbie Masciulli (781-844-7851) so that the committee may follow-up with
that family and issue a special invitation for the child and his/her family.
We’re closer today than we were
yesterday. During the week of April 9th,
Ed Olney and I collected 2000 pairs of eyeglasses from the New England College
of Optometry. Later in the week,
accompanied by Bob Mullen, we drove to the
PU 101
(Club Officer Form)
Many clubs have provided copies of their club officers’ form for the 2008-2009 year; however, we are still quite short of our goal. Please send your PU Forms to the District Governor so that we may complete this project quickly and the District Directory can be completed in a timely manner.
On April 16th International notified me that the request for changing the name of the Marshfield Lions Club was complete. The club is now officially listed as the North River Community Lions Club. The change of name does not affect the club’s charter date or any other significant club events or dates. It is basically an amendment to their original charter and more accurately reflects the community composition of its members.
It is the time of the year for
each club to determine if their Club President meets the requirements for the
Club President Excellence Award. The
application needs the endorsement of the District Governor and should be sent
to me by the middle of June. The
application can be obtained by going to the International Lions Web Site (www.lionsclubs.org). At the web site check The Club Resource
Center. In the
Membership – Can we end the year with a Plus in Membership?
I believe we can! But it will take a contribution from each
club to achieve this objective. First,
we need new members and secondly we must put forth in a significant effort to
retain members who might otherwise be dropped for a number of reasons. It can be done; all we need is the commitment
to do it! Have you adopted the slogan
“Just Ask One” yet? Who knows, it may
just work. There is still time!!!
Tax Guidance for Clubs with Gross Income that is less than $25000
If your club’s annual gross receipts are $25000 or less, you must file the e-postcard also known as 990N. This can easily done by going to the IRS website. As our Lions year is July thru June, you must file with IRS before the 15th of November. The following information is required by your club to file on-line:
n a legal name and mailing address and any other names used
n a Web address if one is used
n employer identification number (EIN)
n organization’s annual tax period (July 1-June 30)
n the name and address of a principal club officer
n a statement confirming the organization’s annual gross receipts at normally $25000 or less.
If you club does not file, you risk losing you tax-exempt status! Any Lions Club that fails to meet its annual reporting requirement for three consecutive years automatically loses its tax-exempt status under the new law.
Yours in Lionism,
Joe Rizzo
District Governor

A DAY WITHOUT SMILING
IS A WASTED DAY ! !
Dear Members of District 33-S Clubs,
The District 33-S Eyemobile Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your generosity this year. It is through your donations that the Committee is able to provide the services of the Eyemobile to you and your Communities.
It has been a very exciting year for the District 33-S Eyemobile Committee. The Eyemobile Committee is now a 501-3c certified organization. We have received our first $1000.00 corporate donation and look forward to many more donations in the future. We look to you, the members of District 33-S to help us reach another of our goals. We would like to have at least one representative from each club in the District as an Advisor on the Committee for the 2008-2009 Lionistic year. The Committee meets the second Monday of each month. As an Advisor we would ask you to attend as many meetings during the year as you are able. You would then be able to report back to your respective Clubs the activities and the financial status of the Committee. If you can help by serving on the Committee please contact me at Benjy30@aol.com.
Yours in Lionism,
Bev Dillon, Secretary
