Monthly Message from your District
Governor
Greeting to everyone:
After attending all the Mid-Winter conventions in the other Districts
in
I am pleased to announce that operation 54/54, the shoe box project
for our troops in combat have far exceeded our expectations. All the clubs that have participated so far
have given far more than the expected one box and once again District 33S is
making a positive impact for those in harms way.
From the outset I have adopted a no pressure approach at my
visitations concerning fund raising and community involvement and this is very apparent
and has proven to be a positive policy.
Yet we have raised a lot of money for eye research as well as our other
projects and I have received total positive feedback from our communities. So please keep up the good work and do what
you can.
It is almost impossible to mention everyone by name but I would
like to take this opportunity to thank Ed Onley, all
the Zone and Region Chairmen as well as all the Committees for all their hard
work that we have become famous for in making this year such a great year.
As we approach the final stretch I’m asking all of you to continue our
tradition of cooperation in working together to Brighton The
Path by Sharing The Flame

OPERATION
SHOEBOX 54/54
Operation Shoebox 54/54 is a continuation of our efforts to support the troops. At our recent Mid-Winter conference, the MA National Guard Commander noted the importance these packages/shoeboxes mean to the morale of the troops, their connection to home and the fact that people care and support them.
We are asking each club to
fill a shoebox with items for a soldier. Within the
shoebox, we are also asking each club to include a
letter, or photo for the individual that receives
the box. Boxes for women soldiers should be labeled on the outside
"Woman Soldier". One item
women soldiers particularly like is hair conditioner. My niece
who recently returned from
We are hoping to send these boxes to the same unit we supported in December, the
1-101FA. The unit has sent us a note thanking all the Lions in District 33-S for their and a power point presentation of pictures from the unit. We are still trying to figure out how to get the pictures to the clubs. As previously noted these soldiers are primarily from the local communities of District 33S. To do this we will need you support in terms of money. Therefore, even if the club has not prepared a shoebox, a financial donation would be greatly appreciated.
Please bring you donations to the
Cabinet Advisory Meeting on February 26th. The meeting will be held at the Holy
Ghost Hall in

Operation “PENNIES FOR SIGHT”
To: Lions, Leo’s, and Lioness:
As a Director to MLERF I have
been appointed chairperson for the Pennies for Sight canister Drive for MD 33
by President Margaret “Peg” Dunn this year.
My committee has started a new incentive project this year to raise
money for all Lions to participate, become a “Partner in Pennies for Sight”. For every Lion or Club that collects $100/00
+ or more will have their club or the individual names put in for a drawing to
win prizes such as: week end get-a-ways,
certificates to restaurants, stores, etc.
Every club will receive a banner patch in the shape of a canister and a
rocker in the shape of a penny with the year on it for every year they participate
in this program. We would like each club
to appoint a chairperson to be in charge of the canister program and turn in
the names of individuals or clubs participating to your Pennies for Sight
chairperson in your District. This
project will run until
To quote one of my members who stated the following:

“DO NOT PUT BLINDNESS ON THE BA K BURNER”
I know that we all have pennies and canisters at home. They may be only half full. Please consider bringing them in and exchanging them for a new one. We need those pennies now to make dollars to contribute to eye research. Won’t you please take a canister and join all the Lions in MD 33 to raise money to help prevent blindness. Become a “Partner in Pennies for Sight”. Why not put a canister in your community at restaurants, stores, banks, where you work or at your meeting place.
If you or your club already participate in this project I thank you very much and ask that you continue. When mailing your checks in to MLERF for the Canister Project, please make sure you state that on your check.
The Pennies for Sight Canister Chairperson for District 33S is: PDG George and Lion Joan Hart. Please contact your District Chairperson to come to your club to speak on this fund raising effort or to speak on MLERF.
Respectfully submitted,
Yours in Lionism

Message from your International President Jimmy Ross
I am very pleased to tell you that our new Family Membership Program
is off to an excellent start. In the month of January alone 42 new
family-oriented clubs have been chartered (with at least 25% of the charter
members coming in as family members). In existing clubs, materials on
integrating family members into the dues structure are in high demand and
international headquarters has sent more than 4,500 certificates recognizing
Lions for participation in the January inaugural kick-off activities.
To keep this trend going and to cement our new members' commitment to
the spirit of Lions Clubs International it is imperative that clubs participating
in the family initiative plan for family involvement and family-oriented
service projects. Family projects should include "hands-on" activities
for children, allow families to work together and make use of the talents and
skills of members at all stages of life. These fun and engaging projects
can also help to invigorate existing members, many of whom report that they
enjoy the time they spend with young adults and children. For ideas on
family-friendly service projects and events, please visit http://www.lionsclubs.org/EN/content/pdfs/family_ideas.pdf
Please also continue to strengthen your club by inviting new members –
you may not have to look far for them. Surely there are family members
who have become familiar faces by participating in Lions' events just to lend
an extra hand. Some may have participated in meetings as guests.
These individuals are prime candidates to become full Lions Club members.
I'm sure you have heard of a "win-win" situation in which
everybody benefits. Integrating family members into your club is even
better - it's "win-win-win."
New members benefit by gaining a formal role in the governance of the club
and our association. Their service, which many have gladly given
informally and even anonymously, will become eligible for the recognition it
truly deserves. And perhaps most important, they will share in the pride
of being a Lion.
Your club will gain not only additional hands and minds devoted to
service projects, but also increased representation at district
conventions. The additional contacts your new members have in the
community will expand your networking resources and make it easier for your
club to get things done.
Finally - and this is at the heart of why we all became Lions – your community
wins today because your club will be able to provide more and better service,
and in the future because your club will remain a strong force in your region,
providing service for generations to come. For complete information of the Family
Membership Program see http://www.lionsclubs.org/EN/content/programs_mem_family.shtml
and be sure to view the Family Membership report in the January edition of
Lions Quarterly online video magazine.
http://www.lionsclubs.org/EN/content/lnn/lq.html
One way in which your club can enjoy the benefits of family
members without interrupting ongoing activities is by the establishment of club
branches. Please consider extending full Lions Club membership to Lionesses, "graduating"
Leos, and other special groups by creating club branches. http://www.lionsclubs.org/EN/content/programs_mem_branch.shtml
Many clubs will use Worldwide Induction Day on April 21 to showcase their new
members and show prospective members what it means to be a Lion. http://www.lionsclubs.org/EN/content/programs_mem_wwday.shtml This is an excellent opportunity to contact
local media outlets and provide them with a public service announcement that
will tell the story of Lions Clubs International and your club. For more
information about how to place a public service announcement please see http://www.lionsclubs.org/EN/content/resources_pr_psa.shtml#.
Thank you for all you do to serve your club and your community.
Sincerely,
Jimmy M. Ross
International President
