Monthly Message from your District Governor

Hello everyone and welcome to 2007.

I hope the holidays were kind to all of you and the New Year is a healthy and prosperous one.

As I mentioned in my previous address the lions emblem is significant of this lionistic year.  The lions head that looks back exemplifies our looking back on the last six months and the pride that we share in our achievements and successes.  But, the lions head that looks forward reminds us of the work we have ahead of us for our final six months.

I am so proud of all of you for the fine work you have done but, I am asking all of you …lets role up our sleeves and finish our year the way District 33-S is famous for.  Hard work and cooperation will once again make our District the finest in Massachusetts..

Obviously our next big push is the Mid-Winter Convention.  On Jan 12th 13th and 14th we will once again come together in the true spirit of lionism to share ideas on helping those less fortunate as well as renewing old friendships and establishing new ones.

CST/PDG Don and I are looking forward to continuing our visitations to the clubs.  We feel we are getting our message out to you that the district is here to serve you and not the other way around.

I would like to remind anyone who wishes to run for VDG that they have to get a letter of endorsement from their club and submit it to PDG Paul Schleicher at the Mid-Winter for your candidacy can be announced.

Thanks for everything you have done for us and see you at the Mid-Winter

Yours in lionism

District Governor Armand “Skip” Becotte

DONATIONS FOR OUR TROOPS

FROM DISTRICT 33S

 Message from VDG Joe Rizzo:

Thanks to all the Lions of District 33S who supported our collection of items for the Troops of the 101st Field Artilery Division assigned to Bagdad Iraq.  As noted earlier, most of the 158 men and women are from the local towns of District 33S and assigned to the Brockton and Fall River Batteries and it was a great way to demonstrate our appreciation and support for what they are doing on behalf of the American people.  In all cash donations made were sufficient to cover the mailing of 37 boxes of items.  At least 4 to 5 of the boxes weighed about 50 lbs.  The items were boxed during the first week of December and mailed on the 6th.  On the 17th of December, I received an e-mail from Captain Nathan Wilder, notifying us of the arrival of our donations.  The following is his from his e-mail:

Classification: UNCLASSIFIED

Boxes upon boxes have been pouring in from the Lions.  I’m not sure how many we have received over the last two days, but there are many books, pens, Stationary, candies, chips / crackers, toiletries, batteries...

Thank you for the spectacular show of support and generosity.  I'll be sending out some photos for you to share with all the great folks that have helped to make this happen.

Thanks,

Nathan

NEW YEARS RESOLUTION

OF A DIFFERENT KIND!

As Americans we need to remember our military heroes                                                            who are recuperating from wounds sustained in Iraq and                                                            Afghanistan.  It would be really nice if you got into the                                                   habit of sending a card or letter to let them know you are                                                             thinking of them and appreciate their sacrifices for our                                                    freedom.  Your act of kindness will be greatly appreciated.                                            Here’s the address.

Important Message from:

Jimmy M. Ross International President Lions Clubs International

Dear Lions:

The coming year will be a very special one for Lions Clubs International.  Lions from all over the world are invited to "come home to Chicago" for our 90th International Convention in July.  There will be many other celebrations and events marking our 90th anniversary beginning with a special feature in an upcoming issue of The LION magazine.  Information on other events will be available throughout the year at www.lionsclubs.org.

Other parts of our association family will be celebrating significant milestones as well.  This year will mark the 50th anniversary of Leo clubs, the 20th anniversary of the Peace Poster contest and the 20th anniversary of women's participation as Lions club members.  These anniversaries will also be featured in The LION magazine and on the Lions Clubs International Web site.

While we will be taking special note of the past in this year of anniversaries, we will also be moving ahead with the new paradigm for our organization.  As part of this new paradigm, we are focusing membership extension efforts on "target markets" that are underrepresented in the association.  Urban populations and the "baby boomer" generation are two important examples.

But perhaps the most important group we can reach out to is young people.  It should be obvious to everyone that the youth of our communities will be the Lions club members of the future.  That is why I am asking all Lions clubs throughout the world to consider sponsoring a Leo club.

The association is placing great importance on Leo clubs in their 50th anniversary year.  In a letter to all Leo Club members throughout the world http://www.lionsclubs.org/EN/content/youth_leo_convention.shtml) I have invited them to come to Chicago and participate in a special Global Leo Conference during our International Convention.  I believe that knowing that Lions Clubs International is dedicated to providing activities and programs that are specially tailored to young people will energize existing Leo clubs and be a powerful motivation for the formation of new ones.

I hope that your club will also place great importance on Leos in the coming year.  The month of April has been designated as Leo Awareness Month.  I strongly urge you to show your members and your communities what young people can accomplish by joining with a Leo club in your area for a special service project in April.

You have my best wishes during this holiday season and for a joyful, service-filled new year.

Sincerely,

Jimmy M. Ross
International President
Lions Clubs International
